St. Hilarion Castle

St. Hilarion Castle

Castle Features and Structure
St. Hilarion Castle consists of three main sections:

  • Lower Section: Surrounded by Byzantine walls, it was used as a barracks for soldiers.

  • Middle Section: Contains the royal palace, kitchen, and the remains of the 11th-century St. Hilarion Church.

  • Upper Section: Features a Gothic-style gate and courtyard from the Lusignan period. Here, you'll find two-story royal apartments and service rooms from the 14th century.

When you climb to the highest point of the castle, you can enjoy a magnificent view through the "Queen's Window," a Gothic-style carved window. This spot offers an amazing panoramic view, especially of the Lapithos Plain and the northern coastline.

Visitor Information

  • Visiting Hours: Open throughout the day; however, it's best to visit early during the summer months for cooler weather.

  • Transportation: The castle is about a 20-minute drive from Kyrenia city center. There is a parking area at the entrance of the castle.

  • Hiking: Since the castle is located on steep slopes, a challenging 30-40 minute climb is required to reach the summit. It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry water.

Cultural Impact
St. Hilarion Castle is also famous for inspiring Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” animation. The castle is a fascinating spot for those who love the visual themes of fairy tales.
